Why WAP Gateway is required for a Mobile Operator?

Mobile internet is fast becoming ubiquitous. Majority of handsets are now supporting data services (GPRS, CDMA1x) and have richer clients for subscribers to access internet and avail services on the move. WAP protocol is used for accessing such content by mobile users. To cater for this increased demand Operators are required to install high capacity WAP Gateways systems in their network.

The Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) is the global, open specification that allows mobile users to easily access mobile internet services and interact with information instantly. The WAP technology currently provides WAP1.2 and WAP2.0 stacks. The mobile devices are embedded with WAP Clients which allows users the ease of internet access through WAP Gateway.

The WAP Gateway acts as a bridge between internet world and the mobile world. Cell broadcast services can be utilised to provide vital information regarding any natural calamities, disaster management measures or any other important information. The location-based services include different services, including: traffic alert service, emergency service, public safety and information regarding weather etc.

Cell Broadcast Center – “Reaching mass in a Matter of Seconds”

Using Cell Broadcast Center (CBC) one can broadcast a single message to all mobile users who are in an area as small as a cell, and to all subscribers who are in the entire network of an operator. All handsets in which the CB channel is activated, receives the broadcast message. The SMS messages are sent point-to point, Cell Broadcast messages are sent point-to-area meaning here the messages are sent to all mobile handsets in a particular area instead of a particular destination number. Also, other advantage of Cell broadcast technology unlike SMS service is, messages are broadcast in real time.

Cell Broadcast was defined in 1993 in phase 2 of the GSM standard. The first commercial system was launched in March 1998 in Lebanon.

With US government emphasizing on requirement of Cell Broadcast Center in an operator’s network in its WARN (Warnings, Alerts and Response Network) Act, US and other country operators slowly started understanding the requirement and necessity of Cell broadcast System.

The real time nature of cell broadcast will make certain services like live cricket alerts more meaningful where the users will indeed get alerts in real time unlike SMS based services where real time delivery cannot be guaranteed.
